MediaTek, the semiconductor giant from China has announced 3 new chipsets at the ongoing CES event. But before I proceed, let me tell you that none of these chips are for smartphones or tablets but for Blu-Ray video players, Smart Watches and other smart devices.
MediaTek MT8581
MediaTek has designed MT8581 chipset exclusively for Blu-Ray video players and other set-top box products. It comes with 2160P ultra high definition video support and HDR image decoding.
MT8581 features HEVC, H2.65 and VP9 4K 60p video decoder for 4K (3840×2160) videos. Also it features MPEG-2, VP8 and VC-1 2K 60p video decoder for legacy 2K (1920×1080) videos.
This chipset is expected to ship in the second half of 2016.
MediaTek MT2523
MT2523 chipset has been designed exclusively for smartwatches. It is a low power consumption processor which comes with inbuilt GPS support and dual-mode Bluetooth.
It supports higher resolution displays and prolongs battery life up to 1 week. MT2523 powered smartwatches will be unveiled in the first half of 2016.
MediaTek MT7697
MT7697 comes with dual-band Wi-Fi and low power consumption Bluetooth support. It is designed for connected appliances and smart home products like smart bulbs, thermostats and cameras connected to smartphones or other devices.
As of now detailed information about this chipset is not available but it is expected to debut in the first half of 2016.
Looks like this year, we are going to see lot many smart home products powered by Mediatek chips.
