HTC is reportedly planning to launch a new variant of its One M8 smartphone

HTC LogoHTC is reportedly planning to launch a new variant of its One M8 smartphone in the coming months. According to reports from @LlabTooFeR and @upleaks, codenamed M8 Eye, this smartphone will feature almost the same specifications as One M8 but there will be a few differences.
M8 Eye will reportedly come with a 5.2-inch Full HD display unlike M8, which packs a 5-inch FHD display and the former will include a 13MP Duo camera without any Ultrapixel technology. This could be the same arrangement that is present on HTC’s Butterfly 2.
Among other details, the M8 Eye will pack Android 4.4.4 with Sense 6.0 and Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor.
@upleaks also notes that HTC One M8 Eye is will only be released in China and India, which is quite interesting as M8 Eye could turn out to be decent competitor to the newly launched Xperia Z3.
We hope to get more details in the coming days.
PS: M8 Eye is different from HTC’s rumoured Selfie phone “Eye.”

Lenovo set to complete acquisition of IBM x86 server business

Nine months after it was first announced, Lenovo’s acquisition of IBM’s x86 server business is headed towards closing.
Having received regulatory approval from the U.S., the European Commission and China, the companies will start closing the US$2.1 billion deal on Wednesday. The handover will take place in most major markets starting this week, and will be completed in the remaining countries into early next year, the companies said.
As a result of the deal, Lenovo is receiving a host of IBM products including its System x, BladeCenter and Flex System blade servers and switches, along with its NeXtScale and iDataPlex servers and associated software.
IBM, however, will still hold on to its System z mainframes, Power Systems, Storage Systems, Power-based Flex servers, PureApplication and PureData appliances.
Lenovo previously acquired in 2005 IBM’s personal computing business.
The deal was originally expected to close in six to nine months, and will give Lenovo a major foothold in the enterprise market. On Monday, the companies said the acquisition will make the Chinese PC maker the third largest x86 server vendor in the world.
Lenovo has already been diversifying its business, at a time when demand for PCs continues to fall. On the consumer side, the company has been aggressively pushing its smartphone business in China, where it’s become a top vendor.
Demand for x86 servers is growing, although competition in the market remains stiff. IBM was the world’s second largest server vendor in the second quarter, according to research firm IDC, with its market share at 23.6 percent. But its lower-end server business has been losing sales to rival x86 server makers.
Despite the competition, buying IBM’s x86 server business could still be a boon for Lenovo. Enterprise products are generally a higher-margin business than consumer gadgets, and Lenovo’s own manufacturing capabilities and sales channels could help squeeze out more profits from the server sales, according to analysts.

Samsung’s Gear VR will not only create an immersive gaming experience

Samsung’s Gear VR will not only create an immersive gaming experience, it will also become a center for media and other services. We have gone hands-on with the Gear VR and must say it’s an amazing experience. It is a bit hard to explain the feeling and you must really test it first-hand to fully understand.

Samsung is taking a step forward to at least give you a hint at how the Samsung Gear VR works. You get a sneak peek into the UI, some video watching and the gaming experience. It’s clear the device follows your head movements, making the experience much more immersive than ever.

Samsung goes into some Cirque du Soleil and Avengers content, as well as the game Temple Run VR. The $200 headset will be a bit limited, as it is only compatible with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Does Samsung have enough pull to make such an accessory successful and entice enough developers?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is a great phone, but it seems like a bad idea to make the Gear VR exclusive to one device, no matter how popular it may be.

Star Wars: Commander isn’t a Clash of Clans clone, except it basically is

Disney’s Star Wars: Commander first arrived on iOS a little less than a month ago, immediately gaining quite a bit of attention among both Star Wars fans and those who enjoy Clash of Clans-style of games. While not an exact clone by any means, SW: Commander is clearly inspired by Supercell’s Clash of Clans, even if Disney denies that it is a clone.

As for the game’s story, you are able to side with either the Empire or Rebellion in a global-scaled player-vs-player war. Like with CoC, you build up a base of operations, train troops and go on missions. As you’d expect, the Empire has some of the greatest tech on its sides, but the Rebellion has a free tricks of its sleeves as well. Overall the game looks nice graphically and, despite being far from original, there’s a lot to love here for both Star Wars fans and strategy games in general.

Unfortunately, the game is a free-to-play affair that puts a pretty heavy emphasis on paying real cash to bust quickly through timers. Is it playable without spending a dime? Yes, but not without some patience when it comes to wait times and other obstacles. To check out the game for yourself, you’ll want to head on over to Google Play.

For those that have spent time with the game, do you feel it’s worth the download? Let us and our readers know in the comments.

Jack Ma set to cash-out up to $867 million in tomorrow’s Alibaba IPO

When Alibaba hits the US markets tomorrow, the ecommerce titan’s diminutive founder, Jack Ma, is set for a huge windfall. Ma has previously indicated that he’ll cash-out 12.75 million shares during the listing. Because Alibaba raised its share price range earlier this week, it means Ma will make even more than anticipated. So if Alibaba debuts at the top of its range, which is $68 per share, then Ma will pocket US$867 million.

Of course, the company chairman – and former CEO – holds a lot more shares. In total Ma has an approximate six percent stake in Alibaba, which he founded in 1999. Though he’ll hold onto those shares, they’ll be effectively worth about US$10 billion, presuming that Alibaba is worth about US$165 billion right after it floats.

That wealth, notes Forbes, excludes Ma’s ownership of other firms. Forbes adds that Ma has set some shares aside for charity, but it’s not clear how many.

Many of the available shares in the Alibaba IPO come from existing stakeholders. Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO), which is selling about eight percent of its Alibaba stake in the sale, will own 16 percent afterwards. Japan’s Softbank (TYO:9984), perhaps more wisely, is not selling a single one.

Alibaba lists on Friday morning in New York.

India’s ‘WhatsApp for mobile customer support’ Haptik bags $1M

India’s messenger app for consumer support Haptik just raised US$1 million in its first round of funding from Kalaari Capital. This mobile app lets users get instant help for products and services using a WhatsApp-like messaging channel.

With this round, Bangalore-headquartered venture firm Kalaari Capital comes on board as Haptik’s first investor partner. The Kalaari portfolio includes Indian ecommerce leaders Snapdeal, Myntra, and Urban Ladder. Haptik will use the investment to scale up, build its operations center, and develop new product features.

Rajesh Raju, managing director at Kalaari Capital, says in a statement: “Messaging is one of the fastest growing communication channels in history, given its convenient asynchronous nature. Combine that with the fact that the current means of getting help via phone and online are cumbersome and often frustrating, we believe the Haptik messaging concierge solution could revolutionize the way we look at customer service. The service could eventually evolve into a full blown mobile personal assistant across products, services, and geographies.”

Founded in August 2013 by two friends Aakrit Vaish and Swapan Radjev, Haptik currently has an in-house team which will get back to any query regarding 180 companies across 12 categories, including electronics, banking, and ecommerce, within four minutes. The app launched in India in April processes over 200,000 messages each month.

Haptik claims that it is “the only messenger app in the world that enables users to complete actions through Android Wear smart watches.”

Instant messaging apps have been a hit with Indian users ever since smartphones reached India. WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app here with over 60 million active users a month. Homegrown messenger Hike is growing rapidly, crossing 35 million registered users. It recently raised funding of US$65 million from Tiger Global Management and Bharti SoftBank (BSB), a joint venture of Bharti Enterprises and Japan’s Softbank Corporation.
