ZUK Z1 Review

ZUK Z1 Review
ZUK is a new smartphone brand and company. It was established back in January of this year. It's actually a sort of strange company. You have a number of Chinese smartphone makers all working together with ZUK, including Lenovo, and Elephone. The Z1 is ZUK's first smartphone, and yes it does look a whole lot like the iPhone 6. The ZUK Z1 is going to be available outside of China running Cyanogen OS, while inside China we're looking at ZUI. Our model here is running ZUI and is the Chinese version. Cyanogen OS 12.1 should be available for it within a few weeks. And we'll revisit the phone once Cyanogen OS is available.

Elephone have today sent over several images of their soon to be released Elephone M2

Elephone have today sent over several images of their soon to be released Elephone M2 Business phone, its shaping up to be a great looking phone, unfortunately the images do not show the screen in use so I cannot advise on the size of the bezels.
The confirmed specification is as follows Mediatek MT6753 octa-core SOC running at 1.5GHz, 5.5″ 1080p display, 13MP rear camera, 5MP front camera, fingerprint scanner and metal unibody.
These are pretty much standard specifications for a mid range handset at the current time, so the phone will need to have some standout design and software elements or a very competitive price to compete and win business.
A lot of opinion is being thrown in to the ring regarding Elephone’s high turnover of new models, are you on the side of more choice equals better choice? or do you long for the days when manufacturers released 1 or 2 phones a year? or does the fact they are being aimed at ‘different’ markets make much of a difference to you opinion.
What do you think of the phones styling? leave your comments below

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Models Get Hands-On

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 Models Get Hands-On

The only worthwhile thing in that collection of words:
For those wondering, the Galaxy Tab S2 8-inch goes on sale starting September 3rd with an MSRP of $399.99 for the base 32GB Wi-Fi only model.
So I can ignore Best Buy and the Samsung store until then.
Boasting an 8-megapixel rear camera, and a 2.1-megapixel front-facing one, we’re pretty content with the tandem – more so when it’s still an ungodly sight to see someone capturing photos using a tablet.
Really, where the hell does that guy live? Come to civilization. People all over New York City are taking photos with tablets. Some people appreciate having such a large viewfinder. Stop being a Tech Snob.

Elephone have just dropped another smartphone sales promotion on the Chinese tech world

Elephone have just dropped another smartphone sales promotion on the Chinese tech world where fans reserving and sharing their reservation contribute towards a final lower price tag.

Anyone with a basic knowledge of business knows that the more you order the bigger the savings can be. The same is true for the smartphone market where the cost of producing only 100 phones would be much greater than producing 100,000 (based on a per unit cost). Normally, though the end-user wouldn’t see that saving, but these are not normal times.

Elephone’s latest scheme is to have customers reserve the upcoming Elephone Trunk phone. The Trunk normally retails at $119.99, but with guaranteed order of 300,000 phones that cost can be reduced to only $89.99 for the end user. To further entice you to take part, Elephone are also offering free Elephone Trunk phones to lucky people.

As the count stands, Elephone have 1387 users taking part in the even which has only cut the retail price by just a fraction. Do you think it is going to be possible for Elephone to meet their goal of an $89.99 Elephone Trunk phone?

Elephone Q – The Smallest Android Smartphone And Also Doubles As A Fitness Track

Elephone Q – The Smallest Android Smartphone And Also Doubles As A Fitness Track
When every top smartphone manufacturer is focussing on releasing flagships that approach the phablet space, here’s Elephone with its newest and an smallest Android smartphone, Elephone Q – you might mistake it to be a normal smartphone, however, features like activity tracking and pedometer makes it a perfect pocket sized phone to double as your phone and your fitness tracker.

The Big – tiny specs

Elephone Q packs a 550 mAh battery, a single SIM slot, measures at 90x 43x 11.5mm with a 2.4-inch TFT display and a resolution of 432×240. Like most of the smartphones these days it features a front camera of 0.3 Mega Pixels and rear camera of 3 Mega-Pixels that will be extended to 5MP using software support, SD memory card support up to 64GB, Wi-Fi, 3G WCDMA, 1GHz MediaTek MT6572 Chipset and with Android 4.4 KitKat as its Operating System.

Elephone Q according to the official specs boasts of 110hours of standby time or 4hours of talk time which is pretty good for a palm sized smartphone. The back cover is made of plastic which can be swapped to other colors.

Elephone Q is one of those unique devices that target the lower-entry level smartphones, it will be really interesting to see what type of market Elephone is trying to target and see if we can see this trend being continued in the future. The pricing of the device is yet to be disclosed. We feel it will be priced around $40.

ZUK Launch,They Aren’t the Same as Other Start-ups

ZUK Launch,They Aren’t the Same as Other Start-ups

ZUK understand that being a spin off brand from Lenovo is going to attract comparisons with OnePlus and Oppo, but they more I spoke to the team behind the company the more I realised they are really rather different.

Firstly,ZUK have been honest about Lenovo from the start

ZUK haven’t tried to hide the fact that they are owned by Lenovo. During the event they openly told us all that Lenovo own 70% of the company, and they even use Lenovo branding on their international packing.

They also openly admit that many of their staff came from Lenovo, and that Lenovo have been a crucial part of getting CyanogenOS on the Z1 and Qualcomm (plus others) to supply the components.

Secondly,ZUK already have a huge staff ZUK are not some small team of marketing people trying to sell a phone designed by their owners. Instead ZUK designed the ZUK Z1 from the ground up and have a staff of 450 people already! Many of those 450 people came from Lenovo (plus other Chinese tech companies) and already understand the market and how to create, manufacture, sell and distribute a smartphone.

Thirdly,ZUK are hoping to be a phone to upgrade too.

ZUK don't say that their phone is a flagship killer or make any other bold claims, instead they have targeted themselves at customers who already have an entry-level device and want an affordable upgrade. During the event ZUK mentioned that they are especially looking to become the phone students will upgrade to from their Xiaomi Redmi’s and similar.

Forthly,The Z1 has been designed for heavy users in mind.

As mentioned above the ZUK Z1 isn’t a self proclaimed flagship killer, and ZUK know that there are phones out there with a higher specification. Instead they want their phone to attract people who use their phones a lot through the day. This is evident with the choice of a 4100mAh battery, quick charge and 1920 x 1080 display, but the choice of 64GB internal memory (plenty for movies) and USB Type C 3.0 (making moving large movie files a fast process) back this up.

Fifthly,ZUK are concentrating on user experience first.

Both ZUK and Cyanogen said they want to concentrate on user experience first and only hope to make a small amount of money. Yes, we hear this from a lot of companies, but ZUK’s sales aims are quite modest when compared to other phone makers. For this first year they hope to sell 100k phones a month or 1.2million in the year. Compared to LeTV’s 1 million in 3 months and Xiaomi’s amazing performances, ZUK have easily achievable goals.

Seventh,Sales, shipping, customer service and warranty support are already in place

Many people questioned ZUK on how they will cover warranty, support, sales etc, but ZUK already have all of this in place. Remember Lenovo are a 70% owner of the brand and Lenovo already have offices in most major countries. They also have sales and distribution channels, and they even have factories around the world too.

As for when international buyer can order a ZUK direct we don’t exactly know. ZUK are still filling orders made by Chinese customers, but hope to have the international model on sale in around a month. This works well as the first stable build of CM for the phone is due in about 3-4 weeks too.

Pricing hasn’t been confirmed, but an international RRP or $299 sounds like the figure ZUK are aiming for. More affordable than the OnePlus 2, and Meizu’s phones, and with better availability and support than Xiaomi!

Cyanogen gets new hardware partner, as ZUK confirms international sales

Ever since evolving from a grass-roots unofficial Android ROM to a legitimate company, making big deals withsmartphone manufacturers, we’ve seen Cyanogen hook up with a number of different phone-makers. From Oppo, we’ve seen it work with OnePlus, and more recently companies like Yu. This week we get word of one more, as startup ZUK announces its own partnership with Cyanogen.
ZUK may be a new name in the smartphone world, but it’s got familiar faces behind it, with Lenovo backing the effort. Last week the company revealed its inaugural Z1 handset with a Snapdragon 801 and other mid-range specs – though with a few niceties like full-speed USB 3.1 and the convenience of a type-C port (above). Today we hear about the software side of things, with ZUK revealing plans to ship the Z1 internationally with Cyanogen OS 12.1.
It initially wasn’t even clear if the Z1 would see retail sales outside China, so this is good news on two fronts: a lot more smartphone shoppers will get access to the Z1 and its affordable hardware (it’s got a sub-$300 price point, in China at least), while not having to worry too much about an upstart smartphone makermaking some missteps with its customized Android build: Cyanogen’s got us covered.
There’s no guarantee we’ll see Cyanogen software on future ZUK models, but from the framing of this deal as a “partnership,” it sure sounds like there’s a good chance of that happening.

Now word’s out, we’re expecting full official details to follow pretty soon.

800,000 units of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 shifted in just 12 hours

Xiaomi has released the first figures from its sale of the hotly anticipated Redmi Note 2 smartphone – and they clock in just shy of a million in half a day when it became available in China. Pretty impressive.
The smartphone was available for a bargain 799 yuan ($125) – a nice price for a Helio X10 powered phone that rivals the more expensive better-known brands.
In other Xiaomi news, the international launch of MIUI 7 is scheduled for later this week.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0

First Long Review (In Thai): Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0

Despite the fractured English, it’s worth looking at.
AnTuTu is again impressive:
SamsungGalaxyTabS2AppDQR001
Over the 50,000-mark, as first reported and contradicting two other scores that were 10,000 points less.
There are many sample photos at the review.
SamsungGalaxyTabS2AppDQR002
Unfortunately, none of them are full-resolution. Nonetheless, I looked at them carefully with zoom and I couldn’t find anything wrong with them. The greens were sharp without muddying and edges were well-defined without looking algorithmically-enhanced (and therefore fake). It’s not as good as an iPad camera but it’s a big improvement over past cameras in Samsung tablets and I don’t think people will cringe at having to use it — except in low light, since there’s no flash.
The one point of the tablet as a demerit is the size of the battery. But it seems this complaint is based on the battery’s capacity and not the stamina of the tablet.
There’s also a video of the review (it spends too much time on the damn custom cover, so be prepared to skip the first seven minutes):

I see that Palm Swipe is available for screensnapping. That’ll be a relief after the Insignia Flex Elite 7.85! I’ve used Palm Swipe before, on the Tab A models.
The MultiView demo in that video is a trip, with three panes open at once.
I’m very eager to test this tablet. I hope to give it the Extreme Test, by attempting a download of the full 290MB version of The American Magazine and trying it with Foxit Mobile PDF and SmartQ Reader.
