The Oppo R5 measures just 4.85mm

The device's slender shell allows no room for a microSD slot or a 3.5mm headphone port, meaning that the included micro-USB adapter or Bluetooth headphones must be used for music playback, and users are stuck with 16GB of storage.

The Oppo R5 will be released globally in December, coming in silver, gold and grey, with a launch price of $499 (£309).

Device maker Samsung and bookseller Barnes & Noble are introducing a new larger-screen Galaxy Tab 4 Nook tablet two months after the first version was announced. Now, the company is offering the tablet with a larger 10.1-inch diagonal screen ahead of the all-important holiday season for $299.99. The Nook offers access to both the Nook app store and Google's Play store for Android apps. The new Nook will come with more than $200 in free content from the NOOK Store, including a books, TV shows, top magazines and apps. ZTE sharpening its portfolio with the Blade Vec in Australia

After years of OEM products for Telstra and Optus, ZTE initially tried to crack the Aussie market with its own device, the ZTE V969, back in May.
That lineup is getting expanded in the lead up to Christmas, with the company announcing it will be launching the ZTE Blade Vec in JB Hi-Fi stores from early November.
With an asking price of $249 outright, the handset is destined to go head to head with the likes of the Moto Gand Lumia 630.

Dual wielding SIMs

From a specs perspective, the Blade Vec is packed with dual Micro-SIM card slots, a quad core 1.3GHz processor with 1GB RAM and a 5-inch 1280 x 720 pixel TFT display.

Running Android 4.4 and with a 2300mAh battery, the Blade Vec actually comes in both a 3G and a 4G version internationally, but ZTE has opted to initially launch the 3G version in Australia.
Fortunately, it's HSPA+ compliant, meaning (theoretical) 21Mbps download speeds, and works on the 850, 900 and 2100MHz 3G networks, plus quad-band GSM, so it will happily work on all the local carriers.
There's 8GB of on board storage, although you only get about 5GB once you take out the OS. Fortunately, you can upgrade to 32GB via the MicroSD card slot.
The phone measures in at 139.3 x 69.8 x 7.8mm and weighs just 125 grams. There's an 8MP snapper on the back and a 5MP front-facing camera too.

Lenovo has finally launched its Yoga Tablet 2 series of tablets

Lenovo has finally launched its Yoga Tablet 2 series of tablets that are powered by Intel chipsets. The tablets are priced in the mid-range and come with a beautiful and functional design that will make them perfect for everyday use.
To begin with, lets make it pretty clear that these are not one of those dual boot monsters like ASUS’ Transformer series. These are basically four variants in total; an 8 inch and a 10 version powered by Android KitKat 4.4 and an 8 inch and a 10 version running Windows 8.1 inside. Lenovo seems to have made a smart choice by picking the quad-core Intel Atom Z3745 Processor that is compatible with both Android and the Windows OS.
What is special here is indeed the design. There is the new hang mode and while the 10 inch versions of both tablets come with the Clamshell Bluetooth keyboard dock, the 8 inch models leaves you just with the the touch screen to type with.

Huawei pushes the concept of 4.5G

Huawei pushes the concept of 4.5G

LIVE FROM GSMA MOBILE 360 MIDDLE EAST: Chinese vendor Huawei raised eyebrows at the show this week by attempting to give the mobile industry a new acronym to mull over – 4.5G.

In a presentation during the opening keynote session, Huawei’s president of wireless R&D, Ying Weimin (pictured), outlined how 4.5G technology will apparently help power smart city deployments.

Ying talked of 4.5G technology offering peak data rates of 10Gb/s, latency of just 10ms, and support for 100,000 mobile connections within a km² coverage. Dubbing it “a forerunner of 5G,” the Huawei exec put a timeframe of 2016-2020 on deployment of the technology, before the industry moves to 5G from 2020.

But what exactly is Huawei’s idea of 4.5G? Ying didn’t go into detail, but his presentation suggested that it’s not just a new marketing buzzword for LTE-Advanced technology. For Huawei, 4.5G sits between deployment of LTE-Advanced and any futuristic vision of 5G. The company promises to showcase a prototype 4.5G deployment at its MBB Global Forum in Shanghai next month, followed by a demo with UK operator EE next year. Pre-commercial launches are set for a 2016 timeframe.

Ying’s colleague Ihab Ghattas, assistant president of Huawei’s middle east division, also touched on the subject of 4.5G in a presentation focused on ‘Monetising LTE’, but again offered little in the way of technical detail. “There is no definition of 4.5G – it is an evolution of existing technology,” he told delegates.

Dan Warren, the GSMA’s senior director of technology, told Mobile World Live that there is unlikely to be any industry-wide agreed standard on the definition of 4.5G and vendors are simply getting ahead of themselves.

“4.5G is a marketing term that seems to have entered industry parlance to fill the gap in divergent industry perception of 5G,” he commented. “A vendor’s view of 5G is that it will have a new, higher speed, lower latency radio technology, but operators are increasingly looking to 5G to be about consolidation of existing technology via heterogeneous networks, expanding coverage, improving network economics (by reducing total cost of ownership) and enabling the Internet of Things, but without a new radio technology being required. It seems that vendors exclusively are using the term 4.5G to describe what operators want 5G to be.”

ZTE Sets World Record in Single Carrier 400G Ultra-Long Transmission

ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, has achieved single carrier 400G wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) signal transmission over 3000km, traversing 10 reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs) with an improved frequency spectrum of 4b/s/Hz (bits per second per hertz).
The transmission, carried out using patented Nyquist filtering technology, fulfills ZTE’s objective for future 400G and high-speed optical transmission - single-carrier per channel and single receiver transmission - for which ROADM is a necessary feature.
During single-carrier transmission, the speed gradually degrades as it traverses multiple ROADM components, due to the filtering effects of higher bandwidths. ZTE solved this issue by carrying out tests which proved the feasibility of single-carrier 400G deployment in an all-optical network with long-distance fibre transmission. The result of these experiments was released at ECOC, the largest European optical communications event, in September this year.
ZTE has committed significant R&D resources to ultra-100G technologies such as 100G and 400G/1T, and has achieved several key innovations in the field. In March 2011, ZTE became the first equipment manufacturer to achieve single-channel 11.2Tbit/s optical signal transmission over 640km in standard single-mode fibres, breaking the previous world record for single-channel transmission rate of 1Tb/s. ZTE also accomplished 24Tb/s (terra bytes per second) WDM signal transmission in the same year, the world's first WDM system to achieve in Tb/s transmission. In February 2012, ZTE and Deutsche Telekom successfully completed a 2450km on-site ultra-long-distance hybrid transmission of 100G/400G/1T signals in Germany, setting a distance record for high-speed signal hybrid transmission.
In October 2013, ZTE, together with China Telecom, completed a T-bit ultra-long-distance optical transmission real-time experiment, achieving the world record for real-time transmission over 3200km. In March 2014, ZTE became the first manufacturer to implement single-carrier 400G ultra-long-distance transmission globally.

Meizu MX4 is like a budget iPhone 6 Plus with big ambitions

Meizu MX4 review
The most fierce and fascinating tech battle going on in China right now is for US$300 smartphones. Despite the low price tag, these phones have grand ambitions and big muscles – enough for them tosteal sales away from Samsung, HTC, and even the iPhone.
While that’s good news for consumers, it’s a tall order for phone-makers to make a phone for that little money which still feels ‘premium’. US$300 is the new high-end for many in China; shoppers have big demands of these phones.
China’s Meizu was arguably the first to build a credible phone in this niche, way back in 2011. But it failed to take off in the same way as Xiaomi’s did later in the same year. For the new Meizu MX4, which ships to consumers today in mainland China and September 22 in Hong Kong, Meizu has dropped the price to give itself a better shot against the Xiaomi Mi4 and new rivals like the One Plus One. (Read ourXiaomi Mi4 review here; the OnePlus One review is here).
