Kirin 950: The new flagship SoC from Huawei
When we are talking about smartphone chips, the discussion is mostly focused around Qualcomm and Samsung because of their Snapdragon and Exynos chips, respectively. But Huawei is producing their own chipsets under the Kirin brand for some time now. And yesterday in Beijing the company announced its latest flagship chip the Kirin 950, that will give other high end offerings like the upcoming Snapdragon 820 a run for their money.
Kirin 950 – Technical Specifications
The newly announced Kirin 950 will be manufactured at 16nm and will be an 8-core CPU. Specifically it will utilise theBIG.little architecture with 4 Cortex A72 cores clocked at 2.3GHz for running power demanding tasks, and 4 low-power Cortex A53 cores at 1.8GHz. Along with the 8 main cores the Kirin 950 SoC will have a co-processor, which Huawei callsi5,which will be used to power the various sensors of a phone. Lastly, the GPU which will drive the graphics is the Mali T880MP4.
The biggest change with the Kirin 950 though is the use of the FinFET technology for the transistors. What that means in the real world, is that the Kirin 950 will be even more powerful while at the same time be less energy consuming. Huawei claims that Kirin 950 is 40% more powerful than previous generations while being 60% less power hungry. They also claim that a smartphone with a 3500mAh battery will get 10 more hours of use in “normal use”, which sounds very promising.
In the graphics department, the new Mali T880MP4 GPU is 100% more powerful than the one found in the Kirin 930 as it has double the GFLOPS of processing power. Finally, one more improvement of the Kirin 950 is that the new processor supports VoLTE, and a better audio performance in general since the latency is down for around 5 to 6 seconds to about 0.5 to 1.5 seconds. Everything points out to the fact that the Kirin 950 will be a beast of a chip and an equal match for the upcoming and much anticipated Snapdragon 820.
