While Sony smartphones aren’t the best-selling (let’s see if the new ad campaign with James Bond changes that) but their camera sensor components are a sign of quality in a smartphone and are used by the likes of Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and Motorola.
Riding high on the success of their Exmor sensors, Sony looks set to buy Toshiba’s image sensor division to not only cut out a competitor but also increase the research and development team that earned them their sterling name in the field.
Unnamed sources claim the deal is close to being sealed for a 20 billion yen (US$165m) acquisition, which also bundles in Toshiba’s plant.
