Huawei's Next Flagship to Rival iPhone 6

Speaking with 21st Century Business Herald (Mandarin), Chengdong said that more "`shocking products are in the pipeline" for Huawei, including the successor to the Ascend P7, suspected to be dubbed the Ascend P8. In the interview, Chengdong had a pre-release version of the Ascend P8 with its sapphire display leading many to believe that the device's launch date is fast-approaching. Chengdong did not reveal specifics on the phone's launch though many believe it will make its debut at IFA 2014 in Berlin next month. "Huawei's relentless commitment to developing premium quality smartphones over the past three years has paid off," said Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu. "We are now ranked number three globally in terms of smartphone shipments, and our brand recognition is growing steadily in key regions such as China and Western Europe." 

Apple is expected to unveil its own sapphire or sapphire-composite display on its upcoming iPhone 6. Last year, Apple invested in a sapphire glass plant owned by GT Advanced Technologies in Arizona. Earlier this month, GT Advanced Technologies' CEO Thomas Gutierrez said, "The build-out of our Arizona facility, which has involved taking a 1.4 million square foot facility from a shell to a functional structure and the installation of over one million square feet of sapphire growth and fabrication equipment, is nearly complete and we are commencing the transition to volume production." Apple is expected to unveil its next iPhone on September 9th.
