Huawei has confirmed that it is working on a successor to its Ascend P7smartphone, and that the handset will feature a sapphire glass display.
In an interview with the Chinese 21st Century Business Herald, Huawei device chairman Yu Chengdong showed off a prototype of an Ascend P7 variant with sapphire display, and said that the company would continue to release "shocking products".
Industrial sapphire glass is synthetically created and is thinner, stronger, and more scratch-resistant than Gorilla Glass, which is used in the majority of smartphone screens today. It is also much more expensive, and is so hard that it has to be cut using diamond-tipped saws.
It had been rumoured that Apple's forthcoming iPhone 6 would have a sapphire glass screen, following the company's investment in sapphire glass plants in Arizona and Massachusetts. However, the material doesnot appear to have been sent to Apple's manufacturing factories ahead of the expected September launch.
Yu Chengdong also told the Chinese Business Herald that Huawei intends to shift its focus away from ultra-low-end smartphones, claiming that they have "no future". Instead, the company's efforts and resources will be directed into creating premium devices.
