Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000
With only a few weeks left until the Elephone P9000 goes on sale, we have decided to put it head to head with Elephone’sprevious phone the P8000 which surprised many people with its large battery and bright screen.
In the Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 head to head we will see if the company has learned from past mistakes and is able to present a better more rounded phone.
Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 Design
The Elephone P8000 design was not too surprising being more of an evolution of the P7000.
The back cover featured a carbon fibre style texture with a metal frames which gave a fairly sophisticated look for the money.
Although the bezels appeared to be quite thin, the screen has quite thick black borders on all four sides, something that gained a fair amount of negative attention from users and made the phone larger than many thought it needed to be.
On the front the phone had 3 capacitive buttons, with the home button doubling up as an LED notification light.
The P8000 weighed in at a substantial 205 grams and was quite thick at 10 mm, although most of the extra weight and width was down to the 4000mAh battery.
The Elephone P9000’s design will stand out above the P8000 due to the virtual absence of side frames with the 2.5D display curvature of the screen further increase the feeling that no frames are present, the P9000 also has a stylish flat rear design.
The fingerprint sensor that was previously found in the home key, has now been placed in its own designated side button.
Elephone certainly seem to have listened to the criticisms levelled at the P8000, they have managed to slim the phone down to a much more acceptable 8mm and reduced the weight by 55 grams to just 150 grams, hopefully this will not be at the expense of decent battery life.
Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 Performance
The elephone P8000 was built around a MediaTek MT6753 8-core running processor running at 1.3 GHz with a Mali T720 GPU and 3GB of RAM.
This provided the necessary performance to perform well in everyday tasks, allowing for a smooth user experience, gaming was ok for less GPU intensive games, however more taxing games some frame rate drops and lag could be expected.
For the P9000, it looks like Elephone wants to really push the phones capabilities and have this time chosen to include a Mediatek Helio P10 and 4GB of RAM .
If these specs are confirmed on the released phone, we will be looking at one of the most powerful phones on the market that can be expected to handle anything you can throw at it.
Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 Display
The P8000 screen was quite good, its 5.5 inch IPS LCD full HD resolution panel had good colour reproduction, good viewing angles and was bright enough to use outdoors.
It seems that for the P9000, Elephone have decided to follow the same path as the P8000 and are once again using a 5.5 inch IPS LCD with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, with colour reproduction, viewing angles and brightness, expected to be at least as good as those found on the P8000 and hopefully better.
Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 Battery
One of the highlights of the Elephone P8000 was the battery, with its 4000mAh capacity it was easily able to hold over a days worth of charge, with some people even reaching two days of light to moderate usage.
Something that was a little frustrating was the time taken to fully charge the 4000mAh battery, from flat it took a little over 4 hours, Elephone should defiantly have put fast charging on the phone to lower that to a more acceptable level.
For the P9000 Elephone are reducing the capacity down to 3100mAh, whilst this will defiantly help to thin the phone and keep the weight down, some P8000 users that upgrade may be left a little frustrated, with having to recharge sooner.
Something to also consider is the affect that upgrading to a Helio P10 will have on battery life, as yet the processor is still pretty much an unknown quantity when it comes to power usage, the hope is that by switching up or down the number of cores required to suit the tasks thrown at the P9000 battery usage may not take too much of a hit, either way the P9000 should see at least a day of usage between charges.
Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000 Camera
The P8000’s camera has been one of the most questionable elements, although it featured a 13 MP sensor, the final results were no more than mediocre, this did improve a bit over time with firmware updates.
Whilst getting good images is possible, the camera can have trouble achieving correct focusing and exposure, so whilst it is possible to achieve your desired picture it takes a bit of time and can be hit and miss at best, also like most phones in this price range, low light photography is far from spectacular.
Hopefully on the P9000, Elephone will be able to leave this particular problem in the past, their choice to fit a 20.7 MP rear camera with dedicated autofocus should provide stunning images, hopefully they will dedicate the necessary time to ensure that the software is able to process and render them properly.
The phone will feature an 8mp front facing camera, again hopefully they will spend time to ensure that it produces shape, vivid and correctly focused images.
And the winner of the Elephone P9000 vs Elephone P8000…
is by a far margin the P9000.
From what we know about the P9000, Elephone have made some pretty significant hardware improvements over the P8000 with the standouts being the screen with virtually no side frame, the Helio P10, and the 20.7mp camera, the slimmer lighter body should also make the phone feel better in the hand albeit at the expense of some battery life, although most users charge their phones nightly so this hopefully won’t be a major problem.
If Elephone can bring the phone out with the promised specifications and with decent software, whilst also producing a phone that looks as good as it does in the renders, Elephone could be well on their way to securing lots of sales and rebuilding their brand.
Let me know what you think in the comments below.
Kind regards Shanos
The P9000 is currently available on pre sale for $299.99 (£196) its worth considering the P8000 as it can now be purchasedfor just $169 (£111) which is a bit of a bargain.
