Microsoft-owned Skype has revealed that is going to discontinue Skype to mobile/ landline voice-calls in India on November 10, 2014. According to the company, the Indian users will no longer be able to call Indian mobile or landline numbers from their Skype account but Skype to Skype calls will remain available.
“As of 10 November 2014, if you are in India, calling from Skype to mobiles and landlines within India will unfortunately no longer be available. This change only affects Skype calls to landlines and mobiles; you can still make free Skype-to-Skype calls within India, and you can still call mobiles and landlines in India from outside the country (as well as make calls from India to other countries) You can also use any Skype Credit you currently have to use Skype WiFi or to send SMS messages to your contacts,” Skype noted on its website.
Skype has not given any reason for this change but it probably has something to do with the regulations. As per current laws, VoIP calls originating from within India cannot be terminated on mobiles or landlines in the country, however the companies have been routing calls internationally to avoid this regulation until now.
Make sure you cancel your Skype call subscription before the aforementioned date to avoid being billed.
